Daniel Kidane, founder of African Language House
A note from the founder

Some languages feel like coming home.

My name is Daniel Kidane. I'm a second-generation Eritrean-American; Eritrea is a small country in the Horn of Africa, and the main language there is Tigrinya.

Growing up, my parents didn't put much emphasis on Tigrinya; they preferred I focus on mastering English so I could thrive in the States. As I got older, I started to feel the cost of that. I knew some Tigrinya but couldn't quite express myself with family back home.

What we believe

Cultural fidelity

Languages don't exist apart from the people who speak them. We teach them the way they're actually spoken — culture included.

Rigor

CEFR-aligned, structured, and built by linguists. African languages deserve the same depth Babbel gives French.

Accessibility

Affordable enough for any learner who wants to start. We're honest about what we charge and why.

Learner agency

You set the pace. We provide the path, the audio, and the encouragement.

Why this exists

Despite hundreds of millions of speakers — and millions more in the diaspora — most African languages have a fraction of the online learning resources available for French, Spanish, or Mandarin. We're closing that gap, for three groups of learners:

Diaspora families reconnecting with their roots.

Diaspora families reconnecting with their roots.

Adults who want to talk to family in the language they grew up speaking, and parents who want a real resource to help their children learn.

Travelers and curious explorers

Africa has some of the most extraordinary natural and cultural destinations in the world. We're for anyone who wants to show up prepared.

Business and global learners

African economies are among the fastest-growing in the world. Bridging language barriers unlocks more of the opportunity.

Where we're going

Igbo & Twi launches next. Long-term, we're working toward the top 20 most-spoken languages on the continent — guided by learner demand. Every "Vote for the next language" submission tells us where to invest, and new languages join Premium at no extra cost.
